Needham Babe Ruth Home Rules (rev 1/2014) Senior League
Violation of Home Rules 2 and 3 will result in a forfeiture of the game

Home Rules - these are modifications to Babe Ruth League, Inc. rules

  1. Free Substitution is permitted

  2. Pitchers can only pitch seven (7) innings per week in Babe Ruth games (Monday through Sunday).

No player may pitch more than ten (10) innings per week in total including any and all non-Babe Ruth games, such as high school, middle school, Legion or AAU. Coaches are asked, if appropriate and to extent information is available, to accommodate school programs in scheduling pitching during the regular season. This rule shall not be applied retroactively, for example, if a pitcher pitches seven (7) innings one day for a Babe Ruth team and subsequently, pitches more than three (3) innings for another team, the Babe Ruth team will not be treated as violating the rule. Also note if a player pitches more than three (3) innings in another league, the two (2) day rest rule will apply before being eligible to pitch in Babe Ruth.

  3. Once a pitcher is removed he cannot pitch again during that game.

  4. No team shall forfeit a game for having less than 9 players and both teams have at least 7 eligible

players. The opposing manager shall provide a sufficient number of fielders to field a complete team in the first inning. All players provided shall only bat for their team. In each inning thereafter the selection of a player or players necessary to field a complete team shall be the last batter(s) in their teams previous at bat. The supplied players can play any position as designated by the receiving team Manager with the exception of pitcher. Only registered players of Needham Little League’ Babe Ruth league are eligible.

  5. Balks: each pitcher will receive 1 warning per regular season game. Full balk rule applies in the playoffs.

  6. Substitute Managers: In the event that a manager is not able to attend a scheduled practice and/or game, only his/her Board-approved coaches may substitute as manager. In the event that no Board-approved coach is available, the manager must coordinate with the League Director to arrange for a Board-approved coach to take over for that game and/or practice. It is ultimately the responsibility of the League Director to make his best effort to find approved coaches to cover games so that the players are not penalized by a game cancellation. In no instance may the manager independently authorize a non-Board-approved coach to take over in his/her absence.

  7. Games are 7 innings (6 if part of a double header). If a game is suspended due to darkness, weather, etc., prior to reaching official game status, the game shall be continued at a later date prior to the start of the playoffs. Failure to complete such game shall result in a loss for both teams. OFFICIAL STATUS is 41⁄2 innings if home team is ahead (3 1⁄2 innings for a double header), or 5 innings (4 innings for a double header) if with the visiting club ahead or tied.

  8. Playoff games will be played at least 7 innings until a winner is determined at the end of a full inning (absent unavoidable circumstances).

  9. No team shall be permitted to have more than one manager and three assistant coaches, for a total of four (4) coaches on the field or in the dugout/bench areas per game. In addition, coaches who are not coaching first or third base during the game must be behind the bench fence or, if applicable, the dugout.

  10. No hidden Ball play.

  11. Babe Ruth uses the MIAA “must slide rule.” A runner must not deliberately run into a fielder, and

must slide or avoid the fielder. The base runner may run around the fielder provided that, in the opinion of the umpire, he has not left the base path.

Special Rules and Regulations - these are optional rules as permitted by Babe Ruth League, Inc. that our league follows
